Human Remains Found on Maumee River Island

TOLEDO, Ohio (WSPD) -- Men fishing for walleye in the Maumee River stumbled across what appear to be skeletal remains. The discovery was made at Audubon Islands Nature Preserve. The island lies between Maumee and Perrysburg.

MetroParks of Toledo spokesperson Scott Carpenter believes the remains are Native American.

"It's not uncommon for us, especially in high water times like this, for Indian remains from burial sites on the island to become exposed," he said.

Just in case, the Lucas County Coroner's office is taking a look. If they determine the remains to be Native American, Carpenter says it will be up to the Ohio Historical Society to decide what to do with them.

"What they've advised us to do is to leave the remains where they are. That's where they were intended to be. Nature is taking its course and as the island erodes so will the grave site," he said.

As for anyone thinking they may want to take the remains from the site, Carpenter says that would be a federal offense and something they take very seriously.
