Toledo Loses Latest Round Of Traffic Camera Fight

(Toledo, OH) Toledo city officials are preparing a new lawsuit to fight state lawmakers over red-light cameras.

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the city must file a new case in Lucas County to challenge a law restricting the cameras' use.  At issue is a law that allows the state to withhold funding equal to the amount of camera fine money the city collects.

Justices say they'll decide the law's constitutionality through the regular appeals process.

Toledo's law director renewed claims state lawmakers are penalizing the city for using red-light and speed cameras to save lives at dangerous intersections, while critics call their use a cash grab. Toledo has won past legal challenges over its home rule authority to use traffic enforcement cameras.
